Insulin Resistance Improves with Low Omega-6 Fat Diet
Bottomline: Study finds that eating high amounts of omega-6 fat is an independent risk factor for insulin resistance.
Ann Nutr Metab 2008;52:145-151
Summary: Young adults and teens that consumed a lower omega-6 fat diet had lower insulin levels, particularly when they ate an adequate amount of omega-3 fats while keeping their omega-6 fat calories under 7% of total calories consumed, according to researchers from New Delhi, India. They examined the diets and insulin levels of 352 Asian Indians, (ages 14-25 years). This is the first study to find that omega-6 fat intake is an independent predictor of high insulin levels. Given the high rate of obesity and heart disease in in teens and young adults, the researchers recommend a low omega-6 fat to prevent insulin resistance, which increases the risk of these chronic health problems.
Study Quote: "It is prudent to restrict the intake of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats."
Comment: Insulin resistance increases the risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes, which is a global heath problem.
