Arthritis Symptoms Improve with Low Omega-6 Fat Diet

Bottomline: Rheumatoid arthritis patients given both fish oil and a low omega-6 fat, improved more than patients taking fish oil with a regular western diet. Rheumatology International, 2003;23:27-36

Patients (60 people) with rheumatoid arthritis were given fish oil, and then divided into two diet groups. One group was put on a low omega-6 fat diet, with a maximum of 90 milligrams of arachidonic acid day.   The other group remained on a normal western diet, typically high in omega-6 fat.

The low-omega-6 diet group, had a significant reduction in tender and swollen joints, compared to the group of patients who took fish oil, but were eating a high omega-fat diet.  Notably, the improvement in symptoms was reflected in the biomarkers, with lower inflammation chemicals, including leukotriene B-4 and a higher level of EPA in the re erythrocyte lipids.

Study Quote: "A diet low in arachidonic acid ameliorates clinical signs of inflammation in patients with RA and augments the beneficial effect of fish oil supplementation."

Comment: Dietary arachidonic acid is found only in animal products. For example, one chicken drumstick, without the skin, has 100 milligrams of arachidonic acid. Therefore, eating a low arachidonic acid diet, means eating fewer animal products. This study is especially notable, because it is double-blind crossover study—with measurable difference biomarkers in the intervention group.
